Obituary

Dr. Richard John Bannon, 80, of Elizabeth Township, passed away Tuesday, February 10, 2026. He was born on January 6, 1946, to the late Olive Mary and Francis Xavier Bannon. A graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, he met the love of his life Judy Kiggins there and was happily married to her for 58 years. He graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1972.

Dick often talked about how his father Fran taught him to never be afraid to ask for help and to always help anyone who reached out to him. That lesson served him well as he ran a successful chiropractic office in Elizabeth Township and later in Versailles for over 50 years. His greatest fear as he aged was not being able to help his patients any longer. In fact, he continued to practice until he was 80. Throughout his life, he served as the Elizabeth Township Civil Service Secretary, was President of St. Michael’s Ushers Club, a member of the Board of Trustees of the McKeesport Elks and was a founding member and vice-president of the Blaine Hill Investment Group.

Dick loved people and made friends every time he left the house. He was always up for an adventure. In the 1970s, he was well known throughout the parking lots of Three Rivers Stadium as the Steelers tailgater with a beer tap coming out of the trunk of his Oldsmobile. He spent the ‘80s watching the games from the sidelines thanks to a field pass he secured through a friend who worked for ESPN. In the ‘90s he organized yearly bar crawls throughout Elizabeth and Forward Townships. As a member of the reunion committee for Thomas Jefferson High School Class of 1963, he was instrumental in locating classmates and keeping everyone connected online.

Dick always said that what he was most proud of in his life was his three children, Sean Bannon (Lacey Horvat), Kelly (Michael) James, and Jennifer Bannon. He never hung up the phone without saying I love you and never rested until they called or texted to let him know they’d arrived home safely. He is survived by them, his wife Judy, grandchildren Jack James and Millie Horvat-Bannon, brother Doug Bannon (Barbara) and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Friends are welcome on Sunday, February 15, 2026 from 4-8pm and Monday, February 16, 2026 from 2-8pm at the Gilbert Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 6028 Smithfield Street, Boston, PA 15135. (412) 751-5000 Drew J. Gilbert, & Samantha D. Murphy, directors. Funeral Mass will take place Tuesday, February 17, 2026 at 10:00am at Sts. Joachim & Anne Parish - St. Michael's Church. Interment will follow at the Mount Vernon Cemetery, Elizabeth Township.
